Portrait of Feng Rui

Feng Rui 冯蕤

Feng Rui (冯蕤) is a Chinese contemporary artist and painter. Born in Zhengzhou in 1994, she graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with an MA in Oil Painting in 2022 and currently lives and works in Beijing.

I do not paint bodies in water, but the way a body reaffirms itself in water

My work often begins with the female body in water. What interests me is not how the body is seen, but how a person in water begins to feel their breath, weight, boundaries, and existence again

Water slows movement, loosens contours, and makes faces, expressions, and gestures uncertain. The figures in my paintings often appear from behind or through fragments of the body; they are in no hurry to offer their faces or hand their stories directly to the viewer. For me, the back is not a way of creating mystery, but a way of keeping distance and protecting the self

Within layered color, flowing brushwork, and repeatedly worked edges of the body, ripples cut through, obscure, and envelop the figure. They leave the figure in a quiet yet unstable state: floating in water while resisting some invisible force

Beneath bright color and a soft sense of the body, I hope my paintings preserve a deeper tension. Calm does not mean submission, and softness can also contain explosive force
